McArthur River, NT
A long term contract for the supply of cranes, earthmoving equipment and associated operations personnel was awarded to Monsta Cranes for the McArthur River Mine.
The McArthur River mine is one of the world's largest zinc, lead and silver mines, situated about 70 kilometers southwest of Borroloola near the Gulf of Carpentaria in the northeastern NT. It is operated by McArthur River Mining (MRM), a subsidiary of the Swiss mining company Xstrata. Although discovered in the 1950s, when it was originally called the HYC ("Here's Your Chance") deposit, it only opened as a mine in 1995. Initially an underground mining operation, the mine has been converted to open-cut.
In August 2012 Xstrata was given approval for a US$ 360 million expansion for Phase 2 & 3 that is seeing the mine double capacity at its operation from 2.5 million tonnes of ore to 5.5 million tonnes annually from 2014. The project will increase annual zinc production to 380, 000 tonnes and lead production to 93 000 tonnes.
Monsta Cranes has grown rapidly through its delivery of a quality service, well maintained and suited cranes and experienced personnel in mirror of the success of MRM.
